Museums

Berlin houses over 153 museums, so the city is of great popularity among the passionate museum-lovers.

There is even a special district, named the Museum Island, which is a noble UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in the northern part of the Spree Island between the Spree and the Kupfergraben and is a home for the most illustrious museums of the city: the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, Pergamon Museum, and Bode Museum. All these eminent museums are built in the middle of the 19^th century and their contents are unique, as the richest collections, which include the memorials of German history, are all exhibited there.

There are a large number of plush museums apart from the Museum Island. The Jewish Museum, for instance, disposes an illustrious exhibition of works of art, commemorating 2000 years of German-Jewish history.

The German Museum of Technology exposes a wide exhibition of technical artefacts from the rich history of Germany.

The district of Dahlem is famous to accommodate some international museums: the Museum of Indian Art, the Museum of European Cultures, the Museum of East Asian Art, the Allied Museum (the Museum of Cold War), the Ethnological Museum, and the Art Museum.

The Beate Uhse Erotic Museum is the world’s largest erotic museum, opened in 1996 by Beate Uhse. This woman has started the first sex shop after World War II as well.

The Gamaldegalerie (or Painting Gallery) will offer to examine the ancient works of the well-known painters, dated back to the 13^th and 18^th centuries.

If you are eager to see some modern paintings, than you’ll, probably, feel that your cup of tee is the Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery). Here you’ll find the painting, accomplished during the 20^th century.

Since spring 2006 everybody has a splendid opportunity to visit a newly reopened museum, dedicated to German history through the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, named Deutsches Historisches Museum.
